Clockwork Orange: from seven till five
I spotted this sundial (1930) on one of the walls of an "Art Déco" villa in the town of Sesto Calende, where Lake Maggiore flows into the River Ticino.
Thank you for your comments, Virginia!! The sun throws a shadow from above on the pin you see at the top. The shadow falls down in the area of the roman numbers and changes itd position according the position of the sun in respect of the pin. The numbers range between 7(VII)AM and 5 (V)PM. After sunset no more shadows to act as a "clock-hand". In the case of this sundial part of the roof of the house blocks the sun from hitting the pin, which is why you do not see its shadow.
Woah! i don't think we have anything this bright and decadent in san fran! what a fantastic shot - i probably never would have stopped by and taken a second look. it just makes me smile :)
superbe ce cadran solaire. Mais il n'est pas a l'heure ;o). La photo est très belle, avec ces couleurs this beautiful sundial. But it is not a time ;o). The picture is very beautiful, with these colors

It's lovely but I'm puzzled about the numbering. Do you know?

It's lovely. Nice capture as well and thanks for the extra information!
I am a big art deco fan and this is very appealing. A for the strange numbering it adds extra interest and yiur explanation is even more intriguing.
So glad your Clockwork Orange is so much more beautiful and benign than the movie. Sundials are fascinating.
